Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Competitors will gain the right to question particular calls from the official, following the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
