Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
