The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
