Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him publicly stated that the club had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Rumours that he might quit were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or imploding.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Comeback

At least one man continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He was on the last one at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He joined initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in that campaign, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Finding His True Position

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
